My former experiences in hearing about Holy Spirit were memorable for the wrong reasons. If you were there, you would probably agree it was weird. None of it taught me on the Holy Spirit being a person. The services always turned into a marketing scheme all about that individual starring their counterfeit gifts. Where is the humility in this!! The exaltation of man is not the Holy Spirit! 20But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation,21for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. (2 Peter 1:20-21)
44Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”45Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,46and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day,47and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.48“You are witnesses of these things.49“And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” (Luke 24:44-49)
I. The Promise
8 But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth. (Acts 1:8) Without the empowering of the Holy Spirit we should not call what we do witnessing.
POWER = WITNESS
“Accept the risen Jesus into your life. Even if you have been far away, take a small step towards him: He awaits you with open arms.”
II. Holy Spirit comes / The Day of Pentecost
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4)
Peter begins to explain to the crowd what is happening. They think that the disciples are drunk but it is an introduction to the Holy Spirit. He goes on to tell them what David said, 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. (Act 2:31-33)
The people in the crowd were cut to heart – wandered what to do.
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” (Act 2:38-39)
Who was Peter lifting up, not himself?
III. What is next – Now that the Holy Spirit is here?
We need the Holy Spirit to do what God has called us to do. He uses the uneducated, inexperienced, those lacking connections, a coveted title, and money.
Those temporal things do not equal what the Holy Spirit promises and will not guarantee success in completing our godly mission – our calling.
18Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 19saying, “Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! 21“You have no part or portion in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. 22“Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that, if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. 23“For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity.” 24But Simon answered and said, “Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.” (Acts 8:18-24)
Disciples – Power to witness
The disciples were not just witnesses because of what they saw, but what they spoke. Some of us do a good job at being witnesses to gossip –something that tears people apart. We all know out of the same mouth comes blessings and curses. If you find yourself trapped in this cycle – there is still time to get away. TODAY IS THE ACCEPTABLE day of the Lord. I know the Holy Spirit will and HAS convicted you.
8 And when He comes, He will convict and convince the world and bring demonstration to it about sin and about righteousness (uprightness of heart and right standing with God) and about judgment: (John 16:8) Notice that this speaks of conviction not condemnation! Do you have Jesus??? I know it is not popular to talk about sin, but Jesus died for our sins!
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. If you are saved and you are not good witness – REPENT! Ask God to help you and let the Holy Spirit guide you. God uses people to help people. If you could hear the prayers of those crying out in need of God – how much more motivated would you get? We would probably set aside those plans that we have and say your will be done Lord. Have you ever asked God to use you? Recognize that opportunity is NOW! There are some people that are confused about their lives because they are running from their God-given purpose. NOW is the time!! Stop running.
